In Darth Maul: Son of Dathomir #4, Maul takes Dooku to Dathomir to meet Talzin, just like Darth Sidious planned. As Separatist forces bombard the Nightsisters' homeworld, Maul faces off against Luke was in a position of weakness and Vader could have easily killed him but cut off his hand instead, effectively ending the fight. This has to be true because Vader didn't then take the opportunity to kill the defenseless Luke.
